(Return to Links Page or Versailles Home)

This page contains citations from the The Library of Congress Online Catalogue related to Cattaraugus County, New York during the 19th and early 20th centuries.  Unfortunately, hyperlinks within the individual citations do not work by simply clicking on them.  This is because of the session time-out mechanism that the Library of Congress uses to disconnect users after 5 minutes of inactivity.  If you're prepared for considerable 'fiddling', the links within citations can be made to work as described in the Hyperlinks Explanation at the bottom of this page.

Hyperlinks Explanation: The Library of Congress uses a session time-out mechanism to disconnect users after 5 minutes of inactivity.  This is implemented by assigning a unique Process Identification number (PID) to each active user.  Each time that a web page is requested from the Library site, the URL that is transmitted includes the user's active PID number.  Within the text string of the URL, the PID is embedded as a sequence similar to "&PID=99999&", where "99999" is a unique number assigned by the Library's computer to each active user.  In order to get the links with in the citations on this page to work, you must first create an active session on the Library's web site by connecting to it, then determine your active PID number by looking for it within the text string in you browser's "address"  area by clicking on a link such as "Database Name" which will then display your active PID.  Knowing this, each time you want to open a link within these citations, you must replace the embedded "99999" sequence in the link from this page with your correct active PID.   I know this is confusing, but fixing it is totally beyond by control.  Unfortunately, this is the way that the Library's session time-out feature is designed to work.
